چکیده

The first metatarsal bones (FMBs) are often better preserved than tibias in archeological samples. The aim of this study was to test the possibility of performing Harris lines studies on FMBs as stress markers instead of tibias. The Harris lines in 264 FMBs from a historic French burial site dating back to two burial periods were studied and compared with the Harris lines in FMBs from 4 historical and 2 Neolithic sites. The Harris lines in 57 tibias and FMBs were com-

Study of Harris lines at the Prat de la Riba necropolis--third to fifth century AD.

Harris lines (HL) are considered a nutritional or pathological stress factor in the study of past populations. This study attempts to contribute to the knowledge of the causal agents for HL in terms of assessing the health state of the population of Tarragona in the Roman period. The presence of HL has been analyzed in 614 long bones (214 humeri, 150 femurs and 250 tibias) from 243 skeletons. N...

Comparing the Effects of Fatigue Caused by the Treadmill and Overground Running on the Pattern of Plantar Pressure Distribution

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the effects of fatigue due to overground and treadmill running on the plantar pressure distribution pattern.  Methods: Twelve novice athletes (Mean±SD age=26.0±2.5 y, Mean±SD weight: 52.0±3.0 kg, Mean±SD height: 159.0±5.0 cm), without sports injuries over the past year, were selected. Overground and treadmill running created fatigue in the samples. Peak pla...

Structural properties of fourth-generation composite femurs and tibias.

The purpose of this study was to measure the structural properties of the latest design (fourth-generation) of composite femurs and tibias from Pacific Research Laboratories, Inc. Fourth-generation composite bones have the same geometries as the third-generation bones, but the cortical bone analogue material was changed to one with increased fracture and fatigue resistance, tensile and compress...

Patient-specific FE analyses of metatarsal bones with inhomogeneous isotropic material properties.

The mechanical response of human metatarsal bones is of importance in both research and clinical practice, especially when associated with the correction of Hallux Valgus. Verified and validated patient-specific finite-element analysis (FEA) based on CT scans developed for human femurs are extended here to the first and second metatarsal bones. Two fresh-frozen metatarsal #1 and five metatarsal...

Osteology of the pelvic limb of the African elephant (Loxodonta africana).

The pelvic girdle was characterized by large, transversely-placed ilial wings. The femur was the longest bone of the skeleton and its fovea capitis was situated caudomedially between the epiphyseal line and the articular surface of the femoral head. A wedge-shaped patella articulated with the femoral trochlea. The bones of the crus were approximately half as long as the femur and consisted of t...
